Backstop [Class Warfare: Shielder]

After finishing my Assassin video for the Class Warfare event, I had about a day before the deadline, and I knew that there weren’t a lot of Shielder entries yet at that point. I’d considered a sports-themed video for my main idea, but couldn’t find any song that seemed to fit. Searching around on a whim after submitting the Assassin video, I stumbled across “Goalie Goalie” from the 2018 FIFA World Cup and thought I could throw together a garbage video very quickly, just for a laugh.

I think it may have taken longer to rip the BluRays of Pride of Orange than I spent actually editing the video, which was just every shot I could find of a goalie character in the first five episodes slapped together in a ten-second video.

It got a few laughs in the streams, which is all I can ask for out of such a zero-effort project.

The Grammaton Cleric [Class Warfare: Assassin]

Speedy180’s Class Warfare event issued the challenge to editors to edit a video showcasing one a character or set of characters that exemplify one of the Fate/Stay Night hero classes (the original eight classes were available for this iteration of the event).

The timeframe for the event unfortunately coincided with the prep period for Anime Boston 2025, so I decided to put together a video in an Iron Chef style (about four hours of actual editing).

Equilibrium had come up in conversation in the same Discord server a few months before the event, so it was fresh in my mind when I went looking for an idea, and I knew that I wanted to use some sort of epic movie score style of audio track. I considered “O Fortuna” and “Duel of the Fates” before settling on “Liberi Fatali” as the audio track.

I debated whether to submit it as an Assassin video or a Berserker video, but ended up deciding to go with Assassin, partly because I knew that there were a lot more Berserker entries already.

It got several positive comments in the live streams of the event, and I think it’s pretty solid, especially as an Iron Chef project.

I’d had this idea on my list for a while, since right after Frozen 2 was in theaters. I’d picked up the soundtrack and heard this cut song – my brain immediately suggested Poppy Hill as a pairing, and it marinated on my idea list for a few years.

After rushing to finish and submit Reflecting North to AWA 2025’s Accolades on Friday morning from my hotel room at Bakuretsu Con 2025, I spent most of the rest of the day at the con. I got back to my room around 8PM, several hours earlier than I had planned, and since I happened to have had the footage with me, I decided to see if I could Iron Chef it into a submittable form in the four hours before the deadline at midnight.

I did manage to get it complete in time, but there were a few compromises along the way. I ended up using a lot more solo walking shots than I intended, mainly to avoid having to spend any of my limited time removing lip flap.

Overall, a fun challenge to tackle and a decent result. I’m glad to have the idea out of my brain and to have used one of the more obscure Ghibli titles in making it.

Just the Good Times

This was my entry to the second half of AMV Sashimi’s Iron Remix 2 event in 2021. The idea was that in a few hours, one editor would edit a video, Iron Chef-style. Another editor would be given just the audio track (no video) and the title of the video to use as the basis for a new video they would have a week to edit.

I was given the audio and title from Opner’s Just the Good Times video, and I still had I Want to Eat Your Pancreas ripped from the first Iron Remix handy, so that’s what I went with as my combo, focussing on the happy moments of the movie and avoiding the heavier dramatic moments.

It was a fun one to make and came out pretty nicely, I think.

The Great Competition of 4999

This was my entry to the first half of AMV Sashimi’s Iron Remix 2 event in 2021. The idea was that in a few hours, one editor would edit a video, Iron Chef-style. Another editor would be given just the audio track (no video) and the title of the video to use as the basis for a new video they would have a week to edit.

A conversation in Discord about Cool Runnings had had the track from the final run in the movie stuck in my head for several weeks, so I decided to do a sports video and chose the Battle Athletes OVA for my video source.

This was pretty rushed, even for an Iron Chef video, but I think it at least came out pretty coherently.

The audio and title were remixed in the second half of the event by Katranat for their video.

Run of Battle

This was my entry to the second half of AMV Sashimi’s Iron Remix event in 2021. The idea was that in a few hours, one editor would edit a video, Iron Chef-style. Another editor would be given just the video track (no audio) and a theme to use as the basis for a new video they would have a week to edit.

I was given the video to Troubleclef’s “Battletits” and the theme of Action as the base for my video.

Since the source video was so short, I needed an even shorter piece of music, which took me quite a while to find. I ended up settling on a snippet from the soundtrack to The Wizard of Speed and Time.

It’s not my best work, but with the limited source and time, it still came out pretty well.

Saying Goodbye

This was my entry to the first half of AMV Sashimi’s Iron Remix event in 2021. The idea was that in a few hours, one editor would edit a video, Iron Chef-style. Another editor would be given just the video track (no audio) and a theme to use as the basis for a new video they would have a week to edit.

The audio for this one was a lucky find. I had thrown every audio file on my computer under 3 minutes long onto a playlist to see what sparked inspiration, and on that list was a shortened version of Night Ranger’s “Goodbye” I had made back in 2013 for a possible AMV that I ended up never starting. Since the original version of the song is 4:30 long, it never would have been on the list of possibilities without that shortened version. I actually went back to the original and made a differently-shortened version for the video.

For the video, with the short time to edit, I wanted to use a movie to reduce the amount of scene hunting I’d have to do, and had recently rewatched I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, which fit very well with the mood of the song.

Overall, I like it, especially for an Iron Chef video made in about three hours.

It was eventually remixed in the second half of the event by Future_Vantas using the theme “Trailer” into their Love Story Trailer video.

Dare Mighty Things (CDVV Iron Chef)

This was my entry for Otohiko’s group in the CDVV Iron Chef competition. After hearing the various songs, this was the one that stuck in my head, and I was thinking of Space as a possible theme.

Thinking about the idea for a while, I remembered the Saturn V launch from Battle Athletes and came up with the idea of incorporating NASA archive footage as a contrast, paired up with scenes from anime that were inspired by the shot, and I was actually surprised at how well it worked. Finding the lunar surface shots from Rocket Girls was a lucky thing, I’ll admit, as I hadn’t watched the series yet.

I’m not entirely happy with the “future” segment, since that was the last one I did and was running out of time to submit, but it still works fairly well.

Bakuretsu Con 2012 Analog Iron Editor

At Bakuretsu Con 2012, I participated in a three-way Iron Chef competition, with the additional complication that all of us had to edit our videos using analog equipment – no computers. We were provided several large tubs of commercial VHS tapes as our source material, and three hours to do our work in.

I borrowed most of my equipment from the public access TV station I was working at and got lucky that I didn’t have major technical issues pop up during the editing (one of the others had a very hard time getting his Macrovision breaker to work correctly, and fought with that for almost half the editing time).

My rig included:

Panasonic AG-DS545 SVHS Player
Panasonic AG-DS555 SVHS Recorder (with a scratch on the record head that left a line in everything it recorded)
Panasonic AG-A850 Editing Controller
Panasonic WJ-MX50 Video Mixer

The tapes in the tubs were a mix of subtitled and dubbed releases, and included movies, short OVAs, and a few tapes of a series – usually the first few but not always, so I decided on using Moldiver, which was one of the few complete unsubtitled series available. At six episodes long, it also offered a decent amount of footage without being too long to conveniently scrub and cue.

My final video ended up winning the vote, and it was a fun experience, but I’m very glad we don’t have to edit AMVs like that any more.
